Appointment of Home School Link Workers Sept 08
East Guildford Confederation has ‘trail-blazed’ in Surrey by appointing and funding four Home School Link Workers to work across groups of schools. The HSLWs can provide advice and information to parents and carers as well as supporting children and young people in dealing with either temporary or longer term problems such as bereavement, parental separation, illness and domestic violence. They work closely with both schools and families and are able to link with a wide range of other agencies and sources of support and advice. In working across groups of schools, they are able to provide continuity when children move to another phase of schooling, eg junior to secondary or when there are brothers or sisters in different schools who may be experiencing similar problems.
A fifth part-time HSLW who will work with the remaining schools is due to take up post on 12 May. The four HSLWs have already provided excellent and very valuable support for children and families from the Confederation and helped with a wide range of issues. In other areas where HSLWs have been working with individual schools, evidence shows that there has been improved attendance and behaviour and resolution of issues at an early stage – all proving to be of great benefit to the children, young people and their families.
